Engine Quits when Instrument Light Turned On

I have seen wires connected to the distributor side of the coil before. People use a test light to "find" power. If the engine isn't running, the dist side of the coil looks like a great spot to connect an accessory. Yeah, until you start the vehicle and the engine dies when you turn the accessory on! A wiring diagram is a very good friend to have.

Not sure since we don't know about potential wiring troubles lurking somewhere, but makes me think the dash light wire is connected to the same terminal as the ignition switch wire, causing a temporary loss of power when it is switched on. Maybe move the wire for the dash light to the opposite side of the Ammeter to see if that helps. The electrical experts here on the Barn will have the answer.

This WAS the cause. While repairing the fuel gauge, I moved the light wire to the output side of the ammeter and all is well.

Thanks 'mcgarrett' and other replier's for your help.

I have found the simplest and most reliable method for wiring the ignition circuit is to run a wire directly from the battery to one side of the ignition switch then run the other side of the switch to the coil. All other accessories will be wired per the standard wiring methods. Using this method separates the ignition circuit from all other devices. If an accessory shorts out the engine will keep running. Most of the wiring problems posted on this forum indicate many people seem to forget which is + and - or pay little attention to making sure wire connections are clean and tight.

I have my ignition switch wired basically the same way. I never liked the idea that the coil is 'hot' all the time as wired originally.

Only difference being I have a fuse in the wire going to the ignition switch to protect the circuit and act as a theft deterrent (remove the fuse and the car can't start).
