engine pans

Yes, there are tabs on the inside of the engine pans that slip under the oil pan bolts. Just loosen the bolts a bit, slide the tabs in and re tighten. The other side of the pans bolt to the frame rails. The pans go under the frame rails.

How do the engine side pans attach? Do I need to loosen the oil pan bolts?

I saw on another thread that someone installed wide washers (see picture) on the pan bolts to spread the "load" on the engine pan tabs. Need three per side.

Sometimes on older engine pans the tabs have been broken off, at least partially. I made some longer, stiffer washers similar to those that Ruth shows. They made the difference.

Also, depending on the year, there are either two tabs or three tabs per side.

I made my washers out of (I believe) 1/4” by 1-1/2” flat bar, cut to width and then center drilled. One washer required shaping to account for a jog in the oil pan right at the bolt.

Would it be better to mount these pans with solid rubber on the engine as well as on the frame? I had a set on mine and one of the "ears" snapped off possibly because it was TOO rigid? Just wondering ! Comment please !

When I installed my second set of engine pans, I modified the inside taps by enlarging the slot so the pan wouldn't have metal to metal contact with the oil pan bolt or the engine. Then I used 2 large fender washers and two 1/8" thick large rubber washers on each pan bolt to hold the pan to the engine. This eliminates engine vibration to the pan and relives stress on the engine pan taps which, in time, will crack and break off. This "fix" has worked for 2 plus years.

I use these to separate the pan bolt torque from the shroud attachment. They're Ford. ;)

(search ebay for "Air Cleaner Shroud Studs". sorry, fordbarn won't allow me to post the link.)

JayJay...That is what I was thinking when I saw "Ruth's" post. I have a bunch of left-over 3.5mm thick steel bar that will fit nicely.
