Engine Oil

I have a 59AB with a oil filter cartridge installed. The filter that I used (recommended by the previous owner) is a NAPA Gold 1006. It was also recommended that I use Pennzoil 20W-50, which I have been doing. I have two questions:
1. We only drive about 1000 miles per year, but the oil is really dark when I change it and the filter each year. I believe that the oil is non-detergent (does not say HD), so what is causing the oil to be so dark?
2. I went to the store to purchase some new oil and found that the 20W-50 Pennzoil now has a note, which the previous containers did not have, stating " Active Cleansing Agents: Cleans out up to 40% of engine sludge in the first oil change". Does this mean that it is equivalent to HD (High Detergent)? Since the builder/previous owner suggested a non-detergent oil, should I change to another brand?

Comments/Recommendations?

Thanks in advance....Joe/Ct

if it is multi grade oil it is detergent, pennzoil in my opion is the worst oil you can use, and never use a non detergent oil, if your engine has any amount of sludge built up in it its because of using non detergent oil, non detergent is barely good enough to use in air compressors where its recomended

Sounds to me like the Pennzoil 20w-50 you were using was in fact a detergent oil just doing what it's supposed to do. If the engine was well-maintained (frequent oil changes, fairly clean to start), I'd tend to continue using detergent oils. I myself use Motorcraft Synblend 5w-20 on rebuilt 221 with no problems.

The only time I've seen non-detergent oil recommended for the 59AB engine, which I have, is during initial break-in. After that, all I've read is to use detergent oil. That's what I use. Straight 30 weight as recommended by Henry. Since I have to add a quart every 1,000 miles, I don't spend a lot of money on the oil. The NAPA guy recommended theirs and it was less than some of the "designer" brands so I use that. Also, even though Henry recommends oil change every 3,500 miles, since I'm "renewing" mine to a certain extent every 1,000 miles I'm going 5,000 miles between changing the oil and filter. Seems to work fine so far. Don't know why it wouldn't.
