shell rotella 15 w40 and i toss it first of the season, mid summer, and just before winter... -yes that's way more than 500/mile per change but i figure no filter, oil is cheap so why not..

Absolutely not! The SM lacks the zinc additive vital for older engines. Do some research, SM is NOT suitable!

That's the advice that I was given too.
With my recent cylinder head problem I've changed the oil three times in fairly quick succession. It is amazing how much gunk modern oils manage to clean out of an old engine.
