Vince brings up a good point on the change of the engine numbers of 1, 6, and 9 in the early part of 1931 by using original Ford Production data from the archives.
His comment that the change started at A4365834, a Febuary 18, 1931 stamped engine came from Ford's Engine Production Records (which I do not have apparently). This was also reflected in the April 10, 1931 Chicago Ford Service Letter.
Using original data, in this case Ford data, is a very useful tool in trying to learn the history and development of anything.
Also useful are the objects out in the field for which one is researching. Since I do not have access to the archives per say, I have relied on field examples for which came from you, my "eyes and ears" throughout the USA.
Several interesting items from the list are as follows concerning the NEW numbers change:
A4111556 engine stamp dated November 5, 1930 using NEW numbers by unknown person;
Not sure about this one and since the person is "unknown" it would be kind of hard to substanuate again!
A4199874 frame stamp dated December 8, 1930 using NEW numbers by Fred Gooding (Decesed);
This I personally saw for myself. However, it was a frame stamping and not an engine stamping. The engine could of very well have been the OLD style but by the time it was pulled out of the stock pile of engines at an unknown assembly plant, the NEW numbers were already in play thus the frame stamping with the NEW numbers.
A4307001 frame stamp dated January 28, 1930 using NEW numbers by Chuck Shaw (Decesed);
Knowing Chuck as I did, he supplied me with lots of information. This stamping may or may not have had been the engine stamping also. Consenses is the same as above.
A4319643 engine stamp dated February 3, 1931 using NEW numbers by Chuck Shaw (Decesed);
This was an original stamped engine as Chuck sent me a picture of it at the time of the research. Unfortunatly I have since lost the photo. Later, Chuck told me that he had sold the engine but to who he could not remember....A4319643, are you out there?
There was a group of numbers between A4319643 (February 3, 1931) and A4356585 (February 16, 1931) that are of the OLD numbering system.
A4356585 engine stamp dated February 16, 1931 using NEW numbers by Ed Brown;
Mr. Brown informed me that this engine was not a restamp but was the original stamped engine. Mr. Brown, if you are out there, I would like some reconformation on this engine.
A4365834 engine stamp dated February 18, 1931 using NEW numbers by data from the Ford Archives supplied by Vince Falter and the April 10, 1931 Chicago Ford Service Letters;
A4368183 engine stamp dated February 18, 1931 using NEW numbers by Tom Carnegie.
Another engine for which I personally saw in Spokane, WA.
All other engines below this number are of the NEW style numbers.
If you have an original stamped engine (NO RESTAMPS PLEASE) between the numbers of A4307001 (January 28, 1931) and A4368184 (February 18, 1931), please let me know.
Thanks.
