Engine knocking after storage

I had a cam with a worn front thrust, and the rear of the cam would “knock” on the fly housing. Another knock, is a worn center cam bearing. It’s easy to check without valves, as you can actually move the center of the cam up and down by hand. Not sure how to check with the valves putting pressure on it?

I also noticed I can't get the fan belt off completely. Does not clear a hump/bolt right below the main pully. I guess that would mean the motor mounts are worn?

Maybe someone tightened the front motor mount too much and collapsed the spring too far. Only tighen enough to get the cotter in.

JB,

Chuck, Post #23, has mentioned some good things to check. It was mentioned earlier but may have gotten lost with all the other comments. As you have the side cam gear cover off, it is easy to check to see if the thrust bearing is OK. Move the cam gear forward by prying with a screwdriver. You should not be able to move it easily. If it does move easily you will have to remove the front cam gear cover and add a spacer under the spring for the thrust bearing. I use washers.

To check the center cam bearing, pry the camshaft up with a lever. It should not move. There is a lot of force from the valve springs pushing down, so it will take some force to push the camshaft up. You will have to have the pan off to do this.

If you pull the starter out to check the ring gear. Leave the starter out and start it with the hand crank. This will rule out it being anything with the starter drive.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Ordered a bunch of parts from Berts today.
@Ernie and @Y-Blockhead, I did notice I couldn't remove the belt due to clearance issues, ordered new front mount springs.
@1crosscut and @Chuck Sea/Tac, will do!
@nkaminar, I think I did, but will check again

I also noticed that the oil pump was very shot and have a rebuilt one on the way.

Thanks!
