Engine Knock on a 1950 8ba

I don't know how you can measure thru the head.
First remove the head.
Now at top dead center measure dome top to deck, you have the dome plus the piston above deck say 1/4" record.
bottom of stroke pick the height point on piston then measure to deck
Then measure both that's the stroke.
You would have know something was wrong when you say you check spec.
Get it right Now.

I think the best thing to do is get a crank to match the pistons.
Sticking up to high most likely 255 piston so get a 255 crank and start over.
This engine was done years ago how knows 50 years ago. And the builder don't know what to do and put 2 gaskets.

On second thought get a stock 239 crankshaft 255 would put piston even higher.

George......Your explanations make it all very clear now.....thanks. DD

unbelievable that a professional shop would put out crap like that. Double head gasket to fix a wrong combination of parts.

Well after picking up a crate engine from a deceased friends family member we assembled it on a platform stand with radiator, guages and start stop switches. Engine runs like a clock but has this annoying knocking sound from the rear. It is resonating the loudest when we place a stethoscope between bell housing and pan.
Removed flywheel no rubbing, removed fuelpump rod no noise reduction, pulled each plug one at a time no noise reduction, removed starter no marks on gear from hangup, all lifters are set properly, no broken springs, no bent or sticking valves, plenty of oil pressure. Tore engine back down- everything looks fine and mikes within specs.
I have seen a couple of threads with members having similar problems but no one has printed their solutions. Any other ideas?

I think this guy is full of **** having fun on the Ford barn.

I bought an 8BA at a swap meet that was newly assembled by a machine shop. The head gaskets were on wrong so water leaked out the rear left side. It had a 4" crank with 3 3/4 ford pistons and rods. The pistons stuck up from the deck 1/8" . It would start and run but knocked like hell. Turning over by hand with a wrench on the crank it wouldn't make a full rev. The engine was all new on the inside, just assembled with wrong parts. I used 2 head gaskets on both sides which gave me the desired .050 clearance. It had 8CM heads on it. Now running it in my vintage dragster with Offy heads and a Super Dual with 94's. Turns 16's in the high 80's mph. Not a daily driver.

I asked to see his depth gauge and no response asked how he measured stroke through the head same no response. To have the desired stroke he claims it has you would have to offset grind. Then how would 8ba rods get it done? There is still a mystery here "worth waiting for the answers" I guess we will see. Haven't seen any pictures of anything.

You know from all the posts you can't read the stroke thru the head.
If I could have done it on my mercury 8ba I would have done it. Pulled the head and was very happy to find a 4" stroke and .060 over.
I think the find is if it were 3 7/8 Stroke with 239 pistons .060 would be over deck height. Now with 4" crank and 239 Pistons you would have 1/8" over deck.
I think this is what he will find sounds like a school project.

George Just some thoughts on the original post question "LOL" Just sayin
