engine knock -clatter help

A "clatter" sound is usually a loose timing gear...it can sound like a cold diesel upon startup. I just tightened one and it had the clatter sound.

Good Day!

Try grounding out #2 & #3 plugs at the same time.If knock is a lot less or disapears it could be the center main brg.

mll, This one's a long shot, and for the end of the list, not the beginning. A cracked crankshaft will make exactly the noise you are describing. This will be most common at rod pin number 4, sometimes number 3. Usually, when it has gotten that bad, you will be able to see it with the naked eye - but the crank obviously needs to be out of the engine. Sometimes you might have to magnaflux it in order to detect it, but one thing is sure: if it is a cranked crank, it is only a matter of time until it lets go...
Good Luck with this one!

Chris

Last week I did a study of Model T engine knocks on the MTFCA forum site. Lo and behold, I discovered 12 distinctly different causes of engine knocks. Check it out. I'm sure most of them apply to the Model A engine as well.

what is the MTFCA forum site?

Would you be able to provide a link? I can't seem to find the list in the MTFCA forum.
