Hi All,
I just took the engine out of my 41 Coupe.I replaces it with a 48 Flathead. My question is what year did Ford use the 29-A engine. I'd like to sell it and want to know what I'm selling.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Joe

Thanks guys.I guess. the engine did say Ford Motor Company on it. I had no idea it was from a Merc. I know Ford owns Mercury but was in the dark about the engine..Thanks, Joe D

I'd keep that engine if I were you. The cylinder walls are thicker than a 59A engine block from 48 and can be safely bored out farther if it is not excessively corroded or core shifted.

The 29 was also manufactured throughout WWII...by us, the Canadians, and the Germans!
USA ones are not marked on the block; the ones used on Mercs had heads that say 29A, but those fit on any 24 stud...you need to pull heads and post pics of manifold area and deck surfaces to verify what the engine is. Also MANY 29's were in civilian trucks (no 29A heads) and on military vehicles and so lacked even the head cast 29.
Too much has happened in the last 70 years to trust any flathead identification based on removable parts!

I know of an original, very low mileage 1944 Ford big truck. It started life with an enclosed box hauling mail then was converted to a wooden grain bed. It's had only 3 owners since new. One of the first things I noticed was the 29A heads! I'd love to have the engine, but the truck is too nice to pull apart. Other unique and interesting wartime items include the steering wheel - 4 metal spokes with a small hub and only the outer rim bakelite/plastic and the clutch & brake pedal pads cast iron with no rubber.
