Engine Import.

Season's greetings.
I am considering importing an engine into the Uk from the States and it seems that Richard Falluca at Antique Enginering has the right product at the right price. Has anybody out there done this recently ? I would appreciate any advice you might have and also any knowledge you have on taxes paid etc.
Regards
John

Hi John, ask some people from the Model A club of UK. Because there are certainly people who know more.

It is critical for you, too, due to floods? BBC said it was a very wet year. I was in Scotland in August. Very warm and dry. The weather is just crazy.

Greetings from Switzerland

On our side of the pond the taxes are going to be just state sales tax as far as I am aware. I do not know what the rate is in his state. The shipping will be expensive I am sure, but if you put it on slow boat it may be reasonable. But look at it this way, you will have one souped up Pheaton compared to the standard British engined cars.:)

Sales Tax in Illinois is high. Crook (Cook) County is over 10 percent. In the past, if an item is shipped out of the state there is no tax due. I do not know what it is like now.

Freight is the unknown -Sometimes can be really good other times expensive- I can't seem to work out a pattern in it all. If you can ship it as part of someone elses container it becomes very reasonable - A friend of mine shipped a V8 engine form LA to Auckland New Zealand for $100 in someones (who was importing a car) shipping container

Lloyd Sandells who is editor of the Model A Ford club GB imported an engine from Snyders a few years back He would be able to give you an idea of the charges.

If you convert the $ price into £ 1 for 1 I don't think you would be too far out

I have shipped engines, parts and whole cars to the UK and New Zealand. I have an inserted motor ready to go.

The main tax expence on this Engine import occurs when it enters the UK 20% VAT [Value added tax] on the purchase price and on the freight charge, insurance etc.
it can amount to quite a charge

Thats why I say $1 to the £1 So figure if the engine & freight are $5000 say £5000 by the time it gets to your door to include the UK taxes.
Hope this helps

Now You Guy's know why you threw all that Tea in the Bay !!!!!

Go gettim' John,
And while they dumped it, a steel guitar was CRYIN' OUT, "TAKE THIS TEA & SHOVE IT"! & "THE SALTY DOG BAG"! & "THE STEEL GUITAR BAG"! (Hey, Leon, take it away, Hezzies READY!) Bill W.

If it had an AF stamped on it would it make any difference in the price? I have a block with an AF number stamped on it, but has the larger bore pistons. The story behind it is it came stateside in a RHD 31 phaeton a guy bought in Australia. I don't know much more than that about it. Rod

The only way you can get out of the import duty VAT is by showing the paperwork from exporting it from the UK in the first place.
Such as if you shipped a car to the States kept it on English paperwork, title or registration drove it around for a few months then sent it back to the Uk .

your Big bore AF engine intrigued me as the only AF engines I have seen in the UK are the small bore ones .
I had a look at Vince's Ford Garage site and in there he states " the Big Bore AF engines were sent to the RHD countries that were NOT part of the British common wealth , Such as some South American countries"
The Common wealth countries Australia, New Zealand , South africa etc. had engines from Canada so they would have CA numbers.
So it looks like it started life some where else.

Yea Bill !!!! You can steal an Englishmans wife Thats OK !!!
but if you take the TEA that's fighten talk !!! A bit like stealin a Texan's Horse.!!!

Buy 10 engines and help the American market-in the meantime, sell the spares at a slight profit for your labors and all is well! A win win.

Many thanks for everybody's interesting input but I did fear a reenactment of the American War of Independence was about to erupt at one point.
It seems that if Customs and Excise can be convinced that the engine is a genuine part for a vintage car then 0% duty and 5% vat , otherwise its 5% duty and 20% vat .either way I still think its a viable proposition.
Must dash as I have a load of American Coffee Beans to off load at Gloucester Docks.

I also thought all of the AF's were small bore. I will get pic's of the stamp block sometime. Likely it will be this spring as my camera does not like this cold weather. Rod

The only time I've not needed to pay full import duties and Vat was if the import was of trivial value (under £20 or thereabouts).
Take care if importing an engine - most guarantees are only honoured if in the USA and are you going to ship it back to the US if it is not up to correct rebuild quality? ( eg incorrect cam spec, poor quality crank?)
MAFCGB website is now www.mafcgb.org.uk. It would be very sensible to join the club, enjoy the benefits, and get advice from the UK club members.

Rest assured John old chap I am very sensible, having joined the club, enjoyed the benefits and got advice from club members but nothing is perfect as you surely know and one must seek answers elsewhere!
