I am dissembling my engine and wonder if you all can give me some advice. can i totally take it all apart and clean everything and inspect all the parts and put new rings and gaskets and paint and put it back together. is this a bad idea on a tight budget?

There is no problem with what you have outlined as long as everything is or can be adjusted into specified tolerances.

Good advice from Mike V. Beware of the Mushroom Factor: You can start out to change your windshield wiper and end up in a two year restoration. Set your task, and don't get distracted.

Be sure the ring lands aren't worn too wide, or the pistons otherwise damaged. A new set of pistons aren't too much money if you need them.

You can slide an old ring up and down the cylinder to check the cylinder taper. Push the ring with a piston, to keep it square to the cylinder. If the ring has .030" gap at the top of the ring travel, and .015" gap at the bottom of the ring travel, then the taper is about .005". You divide the gap difference by pi.
