engine disassembly - order?

I have finished making the engine stand adapter and so ready to start disassembly. Is there an order to pulling it apart, things to be careful of, tips tricks ? I assume that the majority will come apart except for the valves, which I guess I will need special tools and advice on that alone. The first thing might be removing the head studs?

I'm not much of an expert, but since I've seen that a set of new ARP head studs goes for $500, I'd be real careful when pulling the studs (heat, penetrant, and a good collect-type remover) and try to save them.
 
Rob head studs WILL bea pain,
Get a real good stud remover,the best you can afford,
If you are not going to deck the block,leave them in

I may seem like a neanderthal, but I break down engines on a sheet of plywood on the floor. Good leverage on my knees. Good friction from the wood. Flip them over or stand them up as needed. No chasing a stand around and no fear of tipping it over when you break the tight stuff loose and not paying attention to balance.

roll engine over, pull the pan, remove the oil pump/screen, if the pistons are not stuck then remove them one at a time, be sure to keep the rod caps with the rod it came off of, also note which number the piston came out of. after this unbolt the crank shaft bearing caps, make note of which position and direction they came from, remove the crank=====now the fun begins!! pulling the valves and the guides. you will really need a valve guide removing tool-one for sale on this web site, when all the valves are out-you can remove the cam--more to come

Don't think I can leave them in Lawrie I think the block needs too much work, at least two sleeves and the water passages are full of junk..
 
Be sure to:
1. Mark the connecting rods and caps 1-8.
2. Mark the main bearing caps exactly as they were removed.
3. Take photos of the direction the pistons are facing if they are marked.
4. Be patient when removing the oil pump. It can be a tight fit.
5. TAKE LOTS OF PHOTOS AS YOU REMOVE EACH COMPONENT.
6. Don't throw anything away.
7. Use a thread chaser, not a tap and die , to clean out threaded holes and bolts.
8. Make a note of the size and location of the exhaust manifold bolts. Use antiseize.
9. Replace the 2 bolts inside the water pumps with stainless bolts and don't over tighten.
10. Don't forget to install the throwout bearing when installing engine.

2x on the oil pump... it's very easy to break the casting.. twist gently.. generous amounts of a 50/50 mix of acetone and ****** fluid will help. If you do break it, it's a bear to get out but doable. I had to pry down on the gear end after I removed the idler gear. It finally came out (in pieces) after many hours of frustration.

Like tubmab says ARP studs are way up there, but the threads are straight and
true and an extremely high quality product.
The econo studs all seem to have the same fault........the threads are not concentric
with the body of the studs and in too many case are at a slight angle to the body. No
way will the heads assemble correctly or hassle free.
However and further more
Roy Nacewicz makes an exemplary high quality 21 or 24 stud set which I can vouch
for having used them on the stroker motor in my truck and my old reliable test motor.
ARPs have a allen socket on the daylight end Roys do not.........last I checked.

I would take the pan off just as it is on the stand, so you don't dump all the
sludge that is laying on the bottom, all over the pistons and rods you take out next.
 
I did read somewhere that it might pay to leave the studs in and remove after the block gets cleaned, sound right, come out easier? One has already come out with the nut, guess that's common..

The first step would be to see how difficult they are to remove. It can range from simple to near impossible!
 
Be sure to check for and remove the ridge at the top of each cylinder bore before you try to remove the pistons.
