Engine cuts out

When starting my 57 T-Bird from a dead stop or accellerating from a low speed, the engine cuts out if I step on the gas too hard. Is this carburetion or could there be something else going on? It's a 312 with a 4 barrel and automatic transmission.

I have seen bad spark plugs act like that. I have even seen new spark plugs do that at full throttle above 3200 RPMs. I changed brands then. Stopped buying the brand we all bought for a Ford in 58, and hid my face while I bought the far superior Japanese brand.

Some times a little more initial advance helps. Try 10 degrees.

Another item might be the accelerator pump in the carb. How long has it been since the carb was rebuilt?

Could very well be a faulty accelerator pump on the carb. In stop and go traffic, a faulty dash pot can give the same symptoms too. The Dash pot is located on the throttle stop on the carb.

This problem could also be that your carby accelerator pump is malfunctioning. With the aircleaner off and engine not running, if you pump the accelerator you should see fuel squirting down the barrel. If not your pump is failing. An easy check.
