Engine clicks when manually turning it

I just recently changed the points on my 292 Y-block and while I was manually turning the engine to spread the points I coukd hear a clicking, pinging sound coming from the engine. I sounded like a broke spring but I couldn't quite find where the noice was coming from.
Is it possible to turn the engine the wrong way? What way does the engine turn? I have not pulled the valve covers off yet to check for broken springs. What else could it be? It almost sounded like it came from the center of the engine. Could this just be from the lifters needing adjustment? Thanks all.

It's hard to diagnose a noise without hearing it, but if you engaged the starter without starting the engine, the starter drive will be engaged with the flywheel. It has a ratchet built into it, which would ratchet when you turned the engine by hand. That may be what you're hearing. It will go away the first time the engine starts. John

I'm sure this is part of it! It sounded exactly like a ratchet and it only made the sound after activating the starter to test point spark. Thanks
