engine block crack

I removed the exhaust/intake manifold to have it machined. It took the shop 2 weeks to do the job done. I went to put everything back together I noticed a small bit of water in the # 2 exhaust port. When looking in there it looks to be coming from back by the valve stem. Is there a cure for this? Is the engine junk? What to do??

Sounds like a "deck crack" near the exhaust valve seat, that has gone into the water jacket.

This is not uncommon, particularly if the engine has been overheated at some point.

These can usually be pinned ("lock'n'stitch"), but most folks here seem to feel that "it's not worth the money", that "decent Model A blocks are plentiful and cheap".

I have not found that to be the case personally. I have three model A engines, two are running and have deck-cracks around the exhaust seats on # 2 and # 3 cylinders. The third engine is a very stuck doodlebug engine, but no deck cracks.

Suggest you evaluate the condition of the rest of the engine, and base your repair strategy off of that...

I got-by for two years with my coupe engine running Copper Bars-Leak; it worked better with straight water than with 50/50 anti-freeze.

I had a similar but maybe a larger crack in the same area. Got a lot of good advise here on repairing it but decide to replace the damaged block with a rebuilt engine. My decision was based on repairing the engine then having to reinstall and hope that the repair would hold vs replacing it and being able to be back on the road sooner. I decided to take the easier but more expensive road and replace the engine.
