end float - how much is too much

Mark, can you accurately measure the thickness of the plate?
Are you using a gasket between the plate and the rear bearing retainer? (Shouldn't be).
Are you using a gasket between the plate and the back of the box? (Should be).
If so, is it the standard one in the kits or home made? If home made is it thicker than normal?
How thick is the paint? It should all be clean bare metal.

Wish you were closer I'd love to pop in and get my hands dirty.

It needs some careful measurements with proper engineering tools, depth mikes and the like. A good set of calipers would tell us what is going on - even the ones they sell at Lidl.

Mart.

Terry I have that plate and it was on the engine, its just not in the pics

neil your right, the retainer cant do its job because of the combined depth of the plate and the register in the retainer - I did wonder if I have the wrong retainer. I had a look on Mac's web site last night and the retainer he shows on his site is different to the retainer I have.

mart,

I think ive got a depth gauge, will have a look later when I go out to take pics and if its there I will measure the depth or the register for the snap ring and the depth of the register for the bearing.

the plate measured .125 or 1/8th.

even though I said there was some gasket material on the retainer there cant have been, I didn't have extra gaskets - I don't believe there was a gasket on it.

yes using a gasket between plate and the box.

gasket is out of a kit, the one oneills vintage ford sell, part no. B-7153

paint is minimal but I don't have a measurement for it. I am going to remove it when I put it back together

will get some additional pics later today in about an hour.

Plate thickness less snap ring thickness = 0.050" so the retainer needs to have an upstand of 50 thou on its gearbox face. I don't know if such a thing exists but Mac will be along soon to tell us. :)

neil having had a look at pics on the internet of the 35/36 retainer is does indeed have a raised section on the rear of it.
