I just had a timing issue where the points were wide open before top dead center. New to me car, battery good but slow starting and had one shot at cranking after the engine was warm. It was then either cables or roll off to start. I watched a Paul Shinn video on timing that I’d watched and used successfully on my 30 sport coupe but found when I finished up turning the nurex wrench my points were wide open. I knew the wrench was good because it worked on the sport coupe. I’m thinking the steering column needs adjustment to move the spark and throttle leavers. I start loosening that and following Paul Shinns lead in another video proceed to try and get the correct baseline to start timing and I found the problem,,,,. The pin that holds the lever on to the rod was only in one side so the rod was partially turning inside the lever. I removed that pin and saw where it has wallowed the rod out and was allowing much movement of the rod but not so much of the lever. Repaired all that and cranks and runs like new. Paul’s timing video works for me very well as do all his videos and yes I have Les Andrews books which I also use. We all skin cats differently and screw up from time to time and cut their throat but that’s also part of learning.
