Emergency Brake Ratchet

Are you able to tell from this picture if the ratchet or the pawl (or both) is worn? I’m thinking I should change them both. Recent issue since installing and adjusting new cast iron brakes.

It looks like you're missing the spring below the pushbutton. Thus the pawl "droops" and doesn't catch the ratchet.

Springs are cheap. Like $0.60 cheap (A2793)

To replace the spring you have to detach and remove the pawl. Then "lift" the actuator pushbutton/rod (or pull out on the actuator hand-clamp) to expose the little pin that holds the actuator device to the rod. Then place the spring. Compress and replace the actuator top. Then push everything down against the spring and re-mount the pawl.

Hope this helps. The pawl and ratchet look like they should work.

Thank you, Mr. Joe! I just read about it and it seems simple to remove and replace the spring. I am thinking of replacing the ratchet and the pawl since they wear out at the same from what I read. And I would hate to order a .60 spring and pay 10 bux for shipping.

the ratchet is too dirty to see for sure but the pawl looks like one side is blunted — look at the ratchet to see if the other side is damaged, — wire brush it some and look

By enlarging the pictures it sure looks like both the ratchet and pawl are worn. These are not hard to replace, hopefully the parts are available.

I just replaced the ratchet, pawl, & spring on mine. Made all the difference. The ratched didn't look worn until I compared it with a new one.
