Emergency brake handle plating question

I am wondering whether the pawl and internal rod on 28 pistol grip and 29 push button emergency brake handles were cad plated. If you know whether they were or weren't, please post a reply. Is sure seems like they would be cad plated. If they were finished some other way, please post that.

Strange I have one that is NOS and it is unfinished....anyone have anything to show it was cad plated like Rusty and Glenn say??

Mark,
It is very hard for me to believe Ford would use and unfinished steel part anywhere on a car. Ford did use unfinished nuts, washers and bolts in some places, but they are small items. The unfinished part would rust very quickly even when it is inside the car like the emergency brake rod. I suppose Ford could have left it unfinished, but I sure would think it would be painted or cad plated to delay rusting. I think I will contact Gary Karr and see what he did on his Henry winning 29 tudor.

I jus talked to him this AM and forgot to ask.. I just want to see if it is written somewhere. I don't see it in the standards so I am curious

Ok that makes sense to me, that Ford would not have spent the money to cad plate them. Same as my NOS.

Mine is also in finished same as the pawl. I do spray them with clear coat to help prevent the rust.

Restoration Guide area 6 page 8 2011 revision says unfinished.

I know we are talking 1928-29 here but attached are pictures of the handle that I took off of my 1931 Tudor in 1983. Stored in my dry basement ever since. According to RG the pawl and sector should be unfinished for all years.

Kinda looks like some cad plating to me. Possibly the pawl and sector were replaced before I bought the car?

Or is this just how unfinished steel parts look after 80+ years.

I am used to looking at unfinished nuts and bolts and they rust much more.

Ray,
I don't remember seeing the unfinished statement in the JG's. Thanks for point it out.

Just as a side note. If you glass bead that unfinished component, then spray it with a 50-50 mixture of JASCO phosphoric acid (available at Lowes) and water, let it sit for about 20 minutes, than wipe it down in a manner that leaves NO residue 'spots', it will remain in that unfinished condition for a year or MORE. I have some parts that I have done this with and they are still unfinished appearing after 2-1/2 years. NO guarantees!!!!!

I have had many NOS cad plated parts and the original cad plating has survived quite well, and the NOS pawls that I have are also unfinished.

After acid coating you may be able to spray on some semi-gloss clear and protect it even longer and keep the patina.
