Emergency brake backing plate

I've been a long time lurker who has found many answers using the search option. But now I need help. I am putting my brakes back together and I had to come up with a right side emergency brake backing plate. I found a crusty pair and as I started cleaning up the right side one I see no provision for the riveted tab. No holes, no trace anything was ever there. Was there a time when the emergency brake backing plates did not have the riveted tab. Every picture I have found I see a tab riveted to the plate. My first thought is to take the crusty left side tab and put it on the right side but I wanted others thoughts first. One picture is of my left side plate and the other pictures are of my crusty pair. The sandblasted one is hopefully my new right side plate.
Thank-you in advance for your help.
Rick

My AA emergency brake disk has the word BUDD stamped in it as well. The BUDD Co. made I think a lot more things for the model a and aa's.

I happen to have my brakes apart so got a couple pictures.

This is off a 29 ccpu and the plate is stamped with a "K" ....Kelsey maybe?

Anyway, you can see the riveted tab attaches to a similar tab stamped into the plate.

Also the e-brake actuator arm support/tube seems missing on your plates...

This is a left side plate.

hope the pics help....

As 1955 said you are missing the e brake actuating shaft tube on each one. You must have that.. and are better off finding a pair with the tubes on. I've seen early e brake plates with the single thickness tab.. which is why they went to the reinforce piece later as as a change.. and then later they had the tabs on the outside for the brake band o rest on more instead of just the inner edge of the band.

if the tubes are loose they will need a hit with the mig welder. in your case they are missing so find another set.

The actuating shaft tube IS available aftermarket.

If you weld this one in place (its designed to be "peined" over in the hole) you may want to remove a bushing before welding.

To all, I have the tubes. I just didn't want the bushing to get sandblasted with the rest of the plate.
Larry, thank-you for the information about the earlier backing plates. I assumed when I got these they were a matching pair, that's what I get for assuming. I also like the idea of hitting the tubes with the mig welder after they are peened in place. Tomorrow I'll cut the tab off my crusty left and drill holes in the right.
Thanks again
Rick

just make sure its a right.... dont do what I did and pick 2 at random sandblast, 2 coats of paint, cleaned up bushings etc on 2 left hand emergency aa brake plates....I did the left brake first so i just picked one and it went together easy as could be - the right i bolted it up and discovered nothing lined up correctly...

The SERVICE BULLETINS probably tell when the single tab changed to the double thickness tab.
I'd guess it was near the end of 1929, as my March 1929 Tudor still has the single thickness tab.

The earlier emergency brake backing plates had a single layer tab. Ford realized that this was too thin and added the riveted reinforced tab in late 1929. Both will work if you use it as a parking brake as it was intended. The problem is when you use it as an emergency brake. Ford intended it as and always called it a parking brake, not an emergency brake.
