A nice new proper dash harness is 9-10 bucks.... Why half *** and splice it

No splices.
I have enough left to make a new proper set. Correct wire (maybe a bit heavier) good modern insulated wire, cloth wrapped.

You can test the ammeter by connecting it in series with any load, such as headlamps. Just connect it and check it before you put the 4 screws back in to hold the panel in place. My original ammeter is quite accurate and draws about 8 amps to run the lights.

I will wire it into a circuit and put a load on it and see what I get.
I just wish I knew what caused all the trouble in the first place.

I thought it might have been a shorted diode in your alternator that caused the short and burned wires.

Would me disconnecting the ammeter isolate the alternator and explain why the car runs fine now? All the accessories work when the car is running, they just don't with the alternator not turning. I can easily pull the alternator and take it to a local shop to have it checked out.

What happens if you connect the ammeter wires together?
If you get sparks, then the alternator is probably bad.
