I put a 6 volt fuel pump on my 36 coupe 2 yrs ago to get gas up sooner after sitting 3 wks or so.It was a Macs pump and after counting to 6 or 8 she fired right up..So this year tried the same with my 55 with original engine also and with same drain bac gas problem after a couple wks and i can count all i like and still have to pump pump pump..Pump is pumping but not pushing to carb .Any thoughts??

Where is pump located. Should be as close to tank as possible. Sounds like you may have a plugged line. Disconnect flex line and see if it is actually pumping.

I had the same problem with TWO new Carter P-4070 (supposedly bullet proof) pumps. Pump ran fine however, the little plastic coupler between the impeller and pump crumbled on both. I chalked it up to ethanol in the gasoline. Paid $40+ for a Mr Gasket pump from Advance Auto, and it's operating fine...

The electric pump should be as close to the tank as possible, electric fuel pumps push better than pull.
You also have to make sure the pump is rated for the newer unleaded blends of fuel. The unleaded that is being sold now raises he** with the older rubber fuel lines and fuel pumps....
Don't believe what the parts counter man tells you, if the box/instructions does not say for use with unleaded fuels, don't buy it. Most of the replacement fuel pumps for older cars, pre '78, have been sitting on the shelf for a long time, therefore they are not made for unleaded fuel.
