Effect of 3:54 gears on pulling power

This question is for the ones of you that changed the ratio of your 35/36 car from 4:11 to 3:54. Can you tell a big difference in the pulling power of the car with the stock 21 stud engine. Do you find it necessary to down shift into 2nd gear more than you had to do before with a 4:11 ratio.

I crossed The Great Divide in my 39 Merc Coupe in August of 92 and had no problems with the 3:54 gear. I also crossed Mt. Eagle in Tennessee in my 34 with a 3:54 and had no problems. May have to use 2nd every once in a while but on the whole I did not find it annoying, and well worth the difference in normal terrain.

Adding torque, like cubes and compression is a big help. Depends on the weight of the car and size of the hill.

I changed the 4.11 in my little '34 pickup to 3.54 but after i put in the warmed flathead and 5speed, but it made such difference even if i had the 21 stud and 3speed i could of lived with shifting to second now and then.
