Apply battery voltage at handle to energizes the electro magnet poles south & north use this on the ford magnets north to south to increase magnetism.

Rechager for the horseshoe shaped magnets on the Ford flywheel magneto.

A single magnet would be placed on the coil ends and a larger current applied. Has to be DC current, from a pair or more storage batteries hooked to the device.

As stated earlier you would hook 2 modern car batteries in series to give about 24 volts then connect the + and - terminal to the unit through a switch. If it is marked + - follow that , if not, energise it for 3 or 4 seconds a couple of times; that will establish a mild magnetic field within the unit. You can use a compass to deterimine the polarity of your magnet & the unit then place the N pole of the magnet on the S pole of the unit. A simpler method is to suspend the magnet on a string over the poles of the unit - the magnet will find its own polarity & stick to the unit. Once that is done, energise the unit 3 to 5 times, 3 to 4 seconds each time. The magnet is then done - it is good to mark the polarity and put a piece of steel across the magnet until it is installed.

Most of these tools are bench mounted. The handle on this one might lead one to think it was intended recharge the magnets while still mounted on the flywheel. Does anyone know if that could be done? - it sure would save a lot of work.

Yes. That is how this one works. Similar description is in Dykes Automobile Encycl, pages 312-313, and 1118 shows diagram of one, and how to recharge the Ford magneto still in the car. That sketch doesn't have the hand grip, but function is the same. Remove hogshead, determine polarity of the magnet ends, and place the S pole of the Magnitizer on the N pole of the magnet for recharge. Of course you have to be sure the + and - on the Magnetizer are proper.

Thanks for all the input guys. I would think because of the configuration of this unit with the handle you could reenergise the magnets in place on the flywheel. I have a old flywheel in the shop when I get time I'll try. I'll have to establish a test for strenth first perhaps by putting a steel weight on the magnets of a certain weight and see if afterwards i can add more weight. This item was a gift from a good friend so it's not for sale. Very intresting. I tried to find perhaps a direction sheet on the net but no luck.

Frank,
I think the old test was to have the magnet strong enough to pick up a stock T piston with the pin in it.

Yes that's what I read. Will be intresting to try. If you need a set of magnets recharged I would try to do it for you." no charge of course" (Pun) get it. grin
Seriously if you need some done I will try. I did my complete magneto this past winter and had mine sent out to recharge. Just received this gift and still need to do more research, I do have an old Dykes but have not as of yet had the time to dig it out and look as recomended by tmodelman.

Tmodelman, I found my old Dykes that was given to me as a boy by one of my mentors. I just love that book , forgot I had it till you opened the discussion and mentioned it. When I was a youn man I studied it many evenings. That book is so great I almost want to reproduce it. Wonder if there would be a market for it. I own a printing business so this is doable.
I will try and scan the pages you refered to and post. It looks like you can redo the magnets in place on the flywheel by taking off the hogs head. Boy that would save lots of troubles. I am going to do some testing when I get time and report back. Leaving for Hershey Tuesday after work, takes about five hours for me. frank pkny
