Echlin IC 55 Coil

Thanks tubman! I was hoping it would be possible...I really appreciate the info.

I don't have any accessories in the car at all and can swap the bulbs out for LED, so the only other thing I need to verify is if I can run the 6V Pertronix on 12V. I'm assuming not, but I'll call them today and see what they recommend. Worst case is I buy a new 12V Pertronix.

The light bulb was the ballast resistor in the early Ford V8 installations but they only required around 0.8 Ohms resistance since they were only on 6-volts. On 12-volts, using a 1.3 to 1.5 Ohm ballast resistor, it could still use the light bulb as long as the voltage is dropped enough. The only question then would be what the final amperage would be at the primary winding in the coil. A person could try a 1.3 Ohm ballast and then see what the amperage is on the primary side.

Why guess at something that could be accurately calculated?

I have one and always wondered what it was or could be used for. I would sell it. $45 plus shipping.

I have several IC3 and IC4 coils new in boxes. Can anyone tell me if they are 12V vs 6V? Better yet, does anyone know the original application for these coils?
