Easy way to paint wheels ?

One trick, if you get a little paint on the tire accidentally, is to just cover it with flat black. The paint will eventually come off the tire but it will take the colored paint with it. It is pretty tough to clean up tires, especially if they are old and have some checking like on an old tractor or something.

I took the great idea of deflating the tire and inserting paper. I took it a step higher and used pieces of stiff plastic I had, around the rim. I found it was hard to get the paper in under the tire and the paint would stick to it. Paint job came out really nice in my opion and it was pretty easy to do too - thanks for the tip!

BTW the best color match I could find was rust-oleum high performance enamel 7570 almond form HD but I need to paint all my wheels to get them to match I'm on #2 now.

Wow! you guys are an inspiration! It looks so easy to change the look of a car by simply sanding, deflating the tire, mask with paper/plastic and painting. I'm so going to use that technique to repaint my wheels at least until I get new tires. Thanks for all the tips!

`Mine are Rustolleum, "SOFT YELLOW" very nice color. Previous owner did them just by breaking down the bead. With care, we can do them quite well without spending big $$$$$ for powdercoating, etc. Us po' boys gotta' use po' ways! I'm rich, but NOT in $$$$$$$$ Bill W.

When I was about 12 , I helped my daddy paint a 51 buick roadmaster , two tone , green with a white top .

He used two black flag bug sprayers with the glass bowls , when one got empty he would hand off to me for a refil , man those things got hot .

It took us about all day , but it turned out good .

I think daddys arm hurt for a week . You gotta do with what you can afford .

I love it, Hicktick! Remember the sprayers with a tank instead of a jar that stored up pressure & had a little "trigger" to make it spray? You didn't have to pump constantly. On Chief & I's first repaint with a real paint gun, he carefully greased the windows with a skinny, flexible putty knife, like an artist doing heavy oil paints with an artist knife. After it was painted, we took off the grease with razor blade scrapers! It took many cleanings of the glass before you could drive at night without all those "funny" glares!! We also greased all the bumpers & chrome parts. MASKING TAPE??? What's that???
Chief burned off the paint on an old crusty set of 16" wheels, they must have been painted 39 times. Took me DAYS to paint them BLACK with a big ooold knarley paint brush, like, rub, poke, dab, dab, dab!!! Don't LAUGH, they looked GOOD! Bill W.

Has anyone used Dunn-Edwards Syn-Lustro paint? It is for metal and dries harder than Rust o leum. Does not come in spray cans however.

Rustoleum !!!!!!!
take care in masking the tire ! i use brake kleen to remove mistakes . lives for like ever !

I spindle all the wheels up on a 10 foot long electrial conduit mounted between two saw horses and slide them down as I paint them. This gives me the chance to rotate them as they dry. It has worked very well for me for over 40 years. I will try to get photo soon.
