EarlyC4/ later C4 & FMX questions

How do I tell if I have a C4 or an FMX? I have a 1967 Galaxie w/289. Can I tell by jacking up the car and looking.

Is there a difference between the early C4 & the later (1970s era) ones? I know the most common spline is 26. What about length?

Also I prefer to change out the torque converter while it is out of the car. I hear they are different from 1970-on as opposed to the older ones.

I'm going to have someone change out the engine & trans and don't want it sitting in his garage any longer than I have to. I have too many truck projects going on to do it on my own.

Thanks as always.

i had a 67 galaxie with 289 and early fmx.they called it an fx or something like that.it had the rear pump and would start on a push.very last ford to do so.

Yes and no. Outside they are pretty much the same (there are differences in the fill tube - case fill vs pan fill) but internally there are differences. The later ones are the best (80 and up)

OK, thanks. I also learned the C4 is pretty much the same up til the 1981 model year.
