Early Starter

I have an early model A with a bad starter drive and am unable to find a replacement. My question is will a later starter work as a replacement?

It depends on the flywheel you have. A 5/8" starter drive won't work with the multiplate flywheel, as the bolt head on the Bendix spring will hit the flywheel and jam the starter.

Do you know which flywheel you have?
Also which drive do you have? There is the original ABELL drive, and the replacement for it called the "SERVICE DRIVE". Both are for the 1/2" shaft and both work with the multiplate flywheel.

I think it has a multidisc cluch but am unsure. It belongs to a friend and is unfamiliar with the car. it does have the 1/2" drive and i think it is the Able:confused:

How do you tell the difference in flywheels, could you show pictures.

The first picture is the first type multiplate. Later in 1928 the second type multiplate was made. Notice how it's cut down a bit for more clearance for the starter drive. The third picture gives you some idea of what you will see when you look through the inspection hole on top of the bellhousing.

Here is a picture of the single plate clutch and flywheel, which was introduced in November 1928.

An easy way to tell which clutch you probably have is to check the inspection cover. The multiplate is wider than it is tall, and the single plate is taller than it is wide.
