Early Light Switch Part or Gimick Seal

Rowdy

I was looking over some of the 7 tooth steering columns I have and seen an unusual seal nut. It looks more like a waterpump packing nut than the recessed seal nut than I am accustomed to seeing. Was this for the early light switch or an afermartket gimick? Pic's possibly tommorrow. Thanks Rod

That is what I was thinking also, just wanted to be sure as it has the 15/16" shaft gear instead of the 3/4" shaft. I am thinking that I have a fairly decent 3/4" sector gear to go along with this, but need to look for it. Hsg is correct for early with grease zerk outboard on the sector. This column seems to have very little play, but it could be a build up of olg grease and quagulated 600W causing that. Will investigate more this weekend. Rod

Will get pic's tommorrow or Friday depending on work schedule. Lunch is done here, then off to work abit early. Possible 5 day weekend ahead. Rod

You have a very early 28 steering gear with the smaller sector shaft. The light switch attaches using the two top bolts at the bottom of the steering gear; the horn rod passes through the end of the column and is secured to the light switch by a clamp on the light switch body. The very early horn rods were engraved " On- Off - Dim " . The headlight blubs were 21-3 candlepower; in the " Dim" position the 3 CP lit (park); in the "On" position the 21CP lit (no high beam like the 3rd generation switch).

I would suggest you not convert this steering gear to the later type as there is probable someone out there working on a very early 28 that could use or need this steering gear.

Just my opinion,

Ron

Ron, other than the end plate and packing nut all of the early stuff is gone. It already has the later sector shaft, light switch is missing and the top end of the switch and horn button are gone. I am going to look this weekend and see if I still have the early 3/4" sector. If I still do, I may offer it is rebuilt using this. If not it would still be correct for A Febuary of 28 car that would have the 15/16" shaft. The steering still feels tight with very little slop. Rod

Sorry,

I screwed up, thought you had the smaller sector gear. Yes, the steering gear would be correct for Feb. 28.

Ron

As requested by afew, here are pic's of the early style. Notice the lower bushing and end plate are one piece. Also some comparative pic's with the later style lower bushing. Rod
