Early intake - missing holes in my late block

Hey guys,

I'm trying to finish up a new flathead build (my first one) and I've ran into a little bit of a head scratcher. I did some searching but couldn't find anyone else asking this question.

I'm installing an early Edmunds intake on a late ('52 Merc) block. Problem is there are several bolt holes missing in the block compared to the early intakes mounting holes.

The question is- am I okay not using these holes? Or am I inviting a vacuum leak by not drilling and tapping holes for this intake?

You can see where I traced the missing holes in the intake on the top of the block.

Yes, provided the mating surfaces are good. Liberally slather grease on all the metal & gasket surfaces. Torque appropriately center to ends.

Okay another question. Say if I wanted to drill and tap some holes, there isn't any problems with that is there?

I'm going to use the early wire loom tubes and of course on one of the legs that I need to mount it there's a missing hole...

I have an early intake on a late block as you are doing. Used a little silicone on the gasket and works like a charm. I cut off bolts for the empty holes and siliconed them in place just for looks and to keep the holes from amassing gunk.

You can rig a PVC system quit simply. There have been several on the barn. Someone will probably jump in here and detail one for your application. I'm putting one on the 294, should have sone pics soon.
