Early Engine Splash Pan Hardware

WHAT CONFIGURATION OF FASTENING HARDWARE WAS USED TO SECURE MY ENGINE SPLASH PANS TO THE FRAME?

In the process of re-restoring my December 1928 Tudor, (with a frame that has the 1/4” holes in the front cross member for the first generation engine splash pans) I’m finding that the hardware definition for these pans is quite confusing.

On p. 1-7, the Judging Guidelines stipulate a 1/4-28 hex head bolt and square nut. The Standard Hardware booklet and the Dec. 1, 1929 Parts Price List show no 1/4-28 nut, but Ford’s May, 1938 Hardware & Trimming Supplies Catalogue depicts the nut on p. 143, as 350917-S2, an engine pan to frame nut used from 1928-37.

On p. 11, the Standard Hardware booklet, a quantity of eight, “engine pan to frame bolts” is specified with a B-75 (1/4-28 X 9/16, 1/2 Square Head and cotter pin hole) configuration, that was deleted in December of 1929. Yet in that same section, provision is defined for eight, 1/4-20(3/16 X 1/2) square nuts…for what? Eight
A-23515 cotter pins are also specified, which leads me to the conclusion that a square head bolt, square nut and cotter pin below the nut were used until the solid front engine mount/related front frame cross member were modified, resulting in the reduced need for only six hex head engine splash pan to frame mounting bolts.

I recently examined an all original, August ‘29 coupe that had six, A-20534, hex head bolts (w/the cotter pin hole as show in the photo), lock washers, the square nut, but no cotter pin.

I couldn’t find any A-20553’s, so I had some made, and they’re shown in the photo w/o the cotter pin holes because I have to make a drill fixture to bore the 3/32” holes. It would also seem logical that after the front engine mount/front frame rail change, the A-20534 was used with lock washers and a 1/4-28 nut, in the interest of cost.

Is there any other Ford documentation on this matter?

I can't help with the question, but I'm curious as well. I am looking for a set of early pans for my April 1928 Phaeton. Since I don't have them yet, I haven't attempted installing them, so this is a problem I'm going to run into as well.

Looking forward to the answers!

A square nut with cotter pin in the bolt would be a very unusual configuration. I can't think of anywhere else on the Model A that was used, any other cotter pin bolt is paired with a castellated nut. OTOH, I can't think of anywhere a 1/4" bolt is used with a cotter pin and castellated nut, that would be a very small nut and a very small cotter pin. And that application would have a fair amount of lateral stress placed on the pan as the engine rocks, so it's crying out for some sort of pressure below the nut.

In my memory all the engine pans I've worked on have been 1/4-28 hex head bolts with square nuts and split lock washers. I don't remember noticing a cotter pin hole in the bolts or not. Having said that, I'm not sure I've ever worked on a 28.

unfinished cotter pins were used until mid 1929 then changed to unfinished lock washers square nuts used throughout production. all nuts bolts unfinished..

Early...how will I be able to tell that?

1/4"x28 9/16" drilled. Square nut

The square head bolt is a typo in the parts books

Here's the list from the Judging Standards. The early ones have the forward mounting holes and are missing the front flange.
