early 289/late 289 question

It is my understanding that the early ones have a different rear bolt pattern than the later ones, is that right?

Just bought a '67 Galaxie with a 289. Although it still has punch, it smokes. I have a line on a 1966 289 that is completely rebuilt from an abandoned Mustang project that the seller isn't pursuing (needs the money)

I also have an NOS 157 tooth flywheel (C3AZ-6375) and curious if this would work? Some have 164 teeth but they all take the same starter. I'm a bit confused so please educate me.

pre 65 had a different bell pattern.the mustang had a smaller flywheel than a galaxie.

As was mentioned,starting in 1965 all the small blocks had the same bellhousing bolt pattern.

It's been a few years since I messed with a flywheel change, so I'm
just kinda winging a guess at it here.

I know the automatic and the stick starters take a different front
mount housing.
The starter mounts to the bell housing, so I would say, you would use
the correct bell, for the size flywheel you are going to use, or there
may be different front mount housings available. (can't remember)

Someone with more current experience will jump in with good info.

OK thanks, at least I know the block will fit my bellhousing. We'll have to look and see what flywheel is on it.

The galaxie originally used the 164 tooth flywheel if it had a C4 trans. Not sure what flywheel if it had an FMX. Either way the '67 has a 6 bolt bellhousing and the 289's prior to Aug. 1964 have a 5 bolt bell

The early bell housing had 5 bolts then went to 6 bolts.
There are smaller bell housing that take 157 teeth with 6 bolts,
then the larger 164 teeth bell housing. There is a small difference and the starter will NOT work if wrong flex plate.
The 164 teeth will not work with small bell housing.

Not that it matters but weren't some of the 65s the 5 bolt? Typical Ford running production change, or use up all the old stuff before bringing in the change.

'64 was last year for 5 bolt housings. The bolt pattern was changed to reduce a vibration that sometime occurred.
