Early '28 Front Hub Nuts?

I've been looking for replacements for the front hub nuts on my early '28 because one nut is stripped (the spindle threads are OK though.) The originals are 8-slot castle nuts and are 3/4 inch in height. I ordered 6-slot replacements from Eckler but they're only 5/8 inch high, with the result that the cotter hole on the shaft isn't deep enough in the slots when the nut is seated and the top half of the cotter loop is outside of the slot. I can't find anything on line describing a design change in either the spindle length or the hub depth that would explain why the "taller" castle nuts were used initially and shortened later in '28. Has anyone else had this problem and if so any suggestions on how to remedy it?

Many thanks for the suggestion, cadillac512. Everything about this '28 has been complicated and expensive, and your idea is so obvious, simple and cheap that I missed it entirely! Hooray for "country smarts."
