Early 28 "AR" Drums

I'm putting 33/34 17" wheels on my early 28 but the wheel studs are too short. Are the early 28 (Dec, 27) drums different from the later drum?

The early "AR" drums/hubs/wheels are different than the normal later ones, and the wheels are not interchangeable. 1932-35 spoked wheels are useable on the later model A's but not on the earlier "AR" ones.

I suspect that the lack of thread to bolt the later wheels you have onto the early hub/drum is due to interference between the two and the wheel in the area of the bolts is not sitting flush against the hub/drum.

Thanks Randy. That's what I figured but wanted it confirmed. Next question, will later hubs fit on the early hub/backing plate?

Tim - I have an early '28 Tudor sedan with "AR" rear wheels.

As mentioned, there is a service bulletin that explains why later wheels do not fit "AR" drums/wheel studs. I can post it tomorrow if you do not have it.

I wanted to move to cast drums as well as be able to use '35 wire wheels on my car so I had cast drums and later style wheel studs swedged to my original hubs on the rear. The early style drums did not have a separate parking brake shoe as you know but utilized the service brake. I will keep my original parking brake set up but use later style drums so the parking brake surface inside the drum will not be utilized. Make sense? You will need to replace your front brake drums and studs as well if they are still "AR." Hope this helps.

Thanks MP. I don't have access to that bulletin. I'd appreciate of you could post. Can you provide a part number for those lugs?

Here is the service bulletin.
