Dustless Blasting Inquiry

Did a search and read the two threads on Dustless Blasting. I had a guy come look at the 39 Pickup today and quoted me a price for doing both sides of each piece once I get it dismantled.

Anyone had bad experience doing this? The guy stated he has done several cars with nothing going wrong.

I have been cautioned by many not to get sand blasted as the heat will warp the metal. I have a big wide open farm already with sandy soil so blasting outside is not a problem.

The quality of the person doing the blasting is more important than the media used?

This guy does powder coating also along with media/sand blasting. He wanted me to come by his shop and take a look at some of his work. I have been checking and he is the only one doing this in my area.

I spotted a total restoration shop the other day thought I would drop in and see if they do their own in house or outsource.

The part I liked about dustless blasting he will bring his operation to me.

I used to use a wet blast rig to clean turbine engine parts back when I was still doing turbine engine overhauls. The manufacturer Allison/Rolls-Royce was very specific about the make up of the media and the pressures used. The parts had to go though a final clean dip process to remove any traces of grit. They came out looking pretty good.

I quit using dry sand blasting a long time ago because it removes too much material. On the parts too large for a fine glass bead cabinet, I just use chemical methods now. Stripper for the paint and acidic materials or abrasive discs for the corrosion. It's slower but it makes it a bit easier for preparation for prime.

I had the dustless blasting guys do the chassis of my '35 phaeton recently and was very satisfied with the result. They came to my house, did it in the driveway, cleaned up the residue and left. They did a very thorough job. $500. Jim in San Jose.

Have a trunk lid with a slight convex crown , say, an 80/s or so car on hand.

Trunk lids have an internal frame with holes thru to outside skin.

Tell him you want both sides done, as if it was a rusty roadster trunk lid.

See what he says about doing the inside and then if you are happy , let him do a section near the middle of the panel and examine. for any warpage.
