Dull Black wood preservative

In the Juding standards it states that the trucks had a dull black wood preservative that was used on the wood in the bed.
Was it used on the roof wood too?
What is the name of it in a hardware store?
Where can this be purchased?

just be aware that asphalt does not equal asphaltum. Think pine pitch vs. amber. Asphhaltum is what was used in paint.

Isn't the floorboards the only place where this wood preservative will ever be seen ?

I would think that all the rest of the wood in the car would either be covered by upholstery or covered by body color paint ?

I used a black deck stain on my flatbed that I found at the local big box hardware store. It looks flat but it shows the wood grain and I don't have to worry if it gets wet.

I used a 1:1 mix of black enamel and Thompson's water seal. The Thompson's thins out the black enamel and serves to seal the wood. I brushed on a few coats to get that original dark black look. Make sure you stir the mixture often because it wants to seperate.

Years ago, I primed my Corvette frame with DP90 and then painted it with an asphalt paint that sounds just like what was described above. I have to see if there's any left (I don't never get rid of nuthin') and what shape it's in. Maybe I'll get to use it up.
