dual master cylinder conversion

hi
has anyone converted to a dual line master cylinder and retained the underdash power brake booster on a 58 fairlane 500? what master did you use (drum brakes) and what was involved with installing it and the lines etc? I rebuilt the brake system but had a wheel cyl fail(napa Chinese crap) and got to thinking about dual line for safety sake. thanks for any help you can give!!

Use a Granada power master, should bolt up to the fire wall. Check the push rod length, needs 1/32 - 1/16 slop. Make sure you get the "block" to make it a true dual system. The proporsioning valve has a piston that slids back and forth if one line is opened. That piston will close off the bad line and give you two - three pump brakes rather then non.

thanks bill! will the block come from a Granada also or will others fit? also, can I find it new or do I need to find one in a salvage yard?

Sometimes a rebuilt is a better bet than new, most new masters are China or India castings, check Autozone or O'Reilly's look for a Bendix casting code which is on the bottom as Ford used a lot of those. The counter guy might have to pull a few but it's worth it in the long run.

I use the one that came out of the car the master cylinder came from. The Granada is as close to an exact match to the 57/58 Ford that you will find.

You don't need a proportioning valve with drum brakes. You will need residual valves with your vintage drum brakes, located internally in the master or in-line 10 lb. externally.
The "block" mentioned is a combination valve that can include proportioning (not needed here) and a piston operated switch that turns on a dash light if there is a pressure differential of about 400 psi. It does not close off any lines, just simply turns on a light. If you want this feature, you're much better off buying a new valve rather than pulling an old one off 40 year old cars from a salvage yard. :)

thanks for the help, guys! one last question=what year Granada master is best or are all drum brake Granada masters the same bolt pattern etc?

jim

Save yourself some trouble and use a 1967 Mustang dual master for power brakes and 4 wheel drum brakes part# M1488 at Autozone that way you won't have to play around installing residual valves. ;) Only $29.99 or $19.99 if you have a core.
