Dropping the oil pan

thanks everyone.

Stopped at brattens and got pretty much everything i need for the lower end. i was going to do this on my shop floor but i think im going to bug my great uncle and see if i can take it over to his house and utlize his lift this weekend and get it done. he had the twin to this when i was a kid so he knows alot about them and i believe he still has parts laying around. and if we need anything he only lives about 2 miles from brattens :)

got some other stuff as well i think if i really bust into this it will be a driver this weekend

I don't remember if the oil pump shaft has an offset like the distributor shaft has.
Stand corrected.

Don't feel bad. I made the same goof when recording a pan-drop video. In editing, hearing myself say that, did one of those forehead open-palm slaps. D'oh! But since it was already said, and done, it was just another opportunity to prove that I am not perfect.

Speaking for myself, I would strongly consider pulling the engine so that I could check the crank shims with the motor on the stand and do a better job than on my back underneath.

Just mentioning it will help to include the inspection and reworking the oil pump. I have cleaned several screens, and replaced the driver gear in different drivers so while you are there, as Paul mentions in his video, look around. Assuming never works out for me.

Gary (#2 ) mentioned, including the valve chamber clean out. This is a good idea. I have found sediment there that will block the oil channels to the cam. I used pipe cleaners , drills, probes, a mirror, and solvent to clear them. Might ask Brattons for their advice.

I had an engine in the car and dropped the oil pan to clean out the moderate sludge, then did likewise for the valve chamber. When I disassembled the engine a year later I found the oil channel to the rear cam journal completely blocked with crud. Fortunately minimal damage to either the cam or the block, must have been enough oil splashed up from the rods.

When you clean the sludge from the valve chamber keep a vacuum cleaner running so the oil holes don’t get blocked. Like what a dentist will do when cleaning your teeth.
