Dropped my Oil Pan

"I'd like to know what chewed up that gear."

ummm this is what happens to the fiber gears in normal usage. They just do not hold up forever

I never seen a gear look like that from 'normal' usage. I seen a lot of worn out gears over the years, but, thats not normal. I'm thinking the crank gear is junk or someone was doing something that shouldn't have been done.

First, thanks for posting the gear pics, and the link for the malware removal.
I have no idea as to what oil was in the engine, it was quite clean, as to what caused the damage to the timing gear again nothing obvious is showing, the crank gear shows no sign of damage. Since I`ve had the car, Nov `14, it`s not been driven more than a few yards, shunting it about, and started up regularly whilst on stands.

If the crank gear is in good condition, thats a good thing. I guess I wouldn't worry about just installing a new cam gear. I don't have a problem with anyone installing either a good fiber[phenolic] or metal gear. Any of the vendors should have either.

No damage to the crank gear, no marks, nothing, there were no foreign bodies in the oil pan .......................................

Well, then it kinda looks as though some monkey stuck something they shouldn't have between the teeth while changing that gear while trying to tighten the cam gear retaining nut.

I found the timing gear in my Tudor engine looking much like DennisR's. And there was no damage to the crank gear. Needless to say, it was replaced!

Measure the crank and cam distance carefully. After a "well known" Model A rebuilder went through my engine, the distance between the crank and cam was out of spec. I had several gears chewed like your pictures before I figured out the cause. Dan McEachern (number above) made me a beautiful custom gear set to resolve my problem. Very reasonable price also.

I have no idea what the big mystery is, I see cam gears like that all the time in my shop. Maybe you need to tear down more engines.
Fiber will NOT last, think about it
