Driving in the snow

Pictures are from a little over a week ago. Some of you said you liked to see them in the snow. Drove about 18 miles for a club breakfast then on to a members house for a seminar on carburetors. If I'd known how sloppy it was going to be on return trip I probably wouldn't have drove it. Had to stop twice on way home to clear the slop off windshield. On the other hand, I told one of the club members the guy who buys this car from my widow can worry about the rust! I did hose it down when I got home. Underneath real good and I've got a heated garage. so won't be too bad.
Enjoy.

It looks like just a ground cover snow. What was the deepest you drove in? I am about to take mine out around the pond and in the back yard with about 6" of snow. (First Time). I have a couple 4WD vehicles if needed. I've also thought about trying the clothesline around the tires bit. I can't wait to try it, but will wait for some sunshine in the next day or so so I can take some pictures. (for the first time in weeks)

I personally prefer to play in the snow. I do a lot of snowmobiling. Actually like the snow better than summer (well, kinda, almost since I now have the Model A)

Those are great pics. It is really enjoyable to see this type of stuff - thanks!

I blew the driveway clean the day before, see the snow about 10' up on the trees next to driveway. There's probably 6" on the ground maybe a little more. I've got some more pictures from a few years ago. Actually tried the clothes line on tires. I used cotton rope. If I was to do it again I'd use nylon. Cotton wears out quickly.

Hope you had a heater.... I got caught in a road run when snow started and lifted the floor board some... for heat... but i had a HOT Date with me... which helped too.

You wrap the rope around the tire thru the spokes. It creates a cleat type tread for emergencies when you get stuck.

Rust happens on car parts whenever there is liquid water present along with something dissolved in the water that makes it conduct electricity: dirt or salt. (Very pure water won't cause rust.) If you drove your car in the snow/slush/dirt/salt you're better off leaving it cold and frozen than putting it into a heated garage. The garage heat melts the ice, you now have liquid water that corrodes the metal. Furthermore, rusting is a chemical reaction and heat actually increases the rate of rusting. Better to wash it as few times as you can stand during the winter (hard not to, I know!).

I HATE road salt. Rusts our cars, cracks the concrete, kills the fish in the river. Here in Cincinnati I can't believe how much they put down. Why not sand or cinders? Or learn how to drive on snow?

Some of my best memories are getting out on the road in my Tudor on snowy days in the '70's with tire chains on when there was NOBODY else on the road. Used to drive all over town that way. Four wheelers have nothing on an A with tire chains. Well, maybe they can drive faster.

Swell pictures, John. Good for you! Sorry I missed the breakfast and seminar.

Here's my winter picture--some years ago. This was the yearbook photographer's idea for posing; the car never really needed a push. It lived in the Michigan outdoors for five years during high school and college. Rusting did happen but not disastrous.

EXACTLY!!!!!!!
S.D. cars used to last for many years, until they started salting the roads in the early 80's. It used to be common to see 30 year old cars driven daily out there.

I had to go downtown Minneapolis yeterday, and the roads are already full of potholes from all the salt. In the spring you'll see dead trees and grass on the sides of the road from all the salt they dump on the roads around here.

Plowing, and some sand (without salt) on any ice is all that's needed. I'd drive my Model A year round if it wasn't for the salt.

Amen to that, Tom !

The effects of PennDOT "Car-B-Gone" will be my biggest regret of running my car this winter...

I agree being from Mich I know about road salt and how the cars use to rust away in a few years. That is one thing I liked about NC no road salt. But that changed now, they can't wait to put that crap down. They will now find out about rust.

Well, does that mean that the days of goin' down South to buy a "Rust-Free Car" are gone?? That's really sad when you think about it. Oh Well...!

Thanks, Jon, for the photos of the "A" in the snow. Beautiful car and the trees in the background make for calander like pictures. The one in the parking lot not so much. Don/WI
