Driving in the rain

Do you do it? How do you ensure that your car doesn't rust after? Do you keep stock wipers or electric? Questions i've always wondered!!

These cars are not made out of cardboard, they have lasted these many years, and the next 70 years won't be nearly as harsh as the first according to the climate warming forecast!

Stock wipers and wiper motor. My windshield had been badly damaged by wiper scratches, so I polished it with a kit from Eastman. Kent Jaquith in Washington restored my wiper motor, so now it's as good as new.

RainX does a good job of removing the rain from the windshield. The faster you drive the better it works. Marv

Alan,

Did the kit from Eastman help much on your windshield? Between the sand blasting and wiper wear when driving into the sun I can barely see.

We drove my '47 through rain, snow, sleet, hail and old fashioned salt on the road and parked it outside for 47 years from the time we bought it in 1959 until we restored it in 2006. When it was time to restore it the cheap paint job we put on it in 1967 was pretty much gone but there was no rust on the body at all and we had a heck of a time getting down to bare metal through the original paint that was still under what we added 41 years before. Ford knew how to make and apply paint to keep it on and make it last. Shouldn't be any worries about driving it in any kind of weather or temperature any time of year. I do every day of the year no matter the weather. And use the original vacuum wipers.

Paul, that's how mine was. The Eastman kit worked extremely well. I was very impressed. Took me the better part of a day to do the job complete, bnut it came out great. I think key to getting a good job is to take your time and definitely do not speed up your drill. Slow speed only, and don't concentrate on the wiper pattern alone, but keep it moving and make full passes across the glass.

I had used Rainex also, and found that it yellows in the sun on old glass. New glass has no pitting in it whatsoever, so none of the product remains to yellow. I would recomend Rainex only for new glass.

I drive in rain all the time. I dont know about the top but the oil leaks keep the undercarriage from rusting. :)

Laurie, Kent is an old fashioned V8er and doesn't do Email, sorry. He is very responsive to snail mail and phone calls, though.

The biggest problems I've ever encountered (while driving one of our Flatheads in the rain) are all the other drivers on the road. It's amazing how many people don't know how to drive in inclement weather; :( they present the biggest hazard...

They've been wet before and will get wet again. I've had people ask me if I drive my cars in the rain. I guess they think I can predict the weather and never go out unless I know the sun is going to shine for a few days. Yep, I've driven in the rain and use electric wipers with Rain-X. If you drive your old car it's bound to get wet at one time or another.

I work with a guy that has a GTO and ho won't drive it if it is going to or has rained......what fun is that, I don't want to need to check the weather anytime I go anywhere.

seems like the rocker panels are the first place they rust out. my first,a46 2dr ford, a46 merc coupe, and now this one, a 48 coupe, all had that problem.
