Driving in Canada

Gas here in Fairbanks, Alaska is about $4.15 - 4.25 per gallon, Fortunately? we live 16 miles from the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and an Oil Refinery. Diesel is worse at around $4.45 per gallon. No Ethanol in the gas here in the Interior, you wouldn't want to get caught out at -50 with that stuff in your tank.
Lots of Model A's here in Fairbanks, if you are going to be in the area let some of us know.

O.K., calm down. I'm just saying that if you've had a DUI or some other difficulty in the last 10 years you probably will get turned away. Better to be forewarned than to get to the border and get turned away over something you had completely forgotten about. A US Border Patrolman told me the US lets Canadians with current DUI's into the US with no problem.

I have actually heard other people say this as well so I don't doubt it.

However I don't drink so it never crosses my mind.

I am soon leaving on a trip, driving my A, from GA to AK. Can anyone tell me about the gas in Canada and Alaska? Does it have the same junk we have in the US?

Ray,
sounds exciting, indeed! will you be pulling any kind of trailer? I ask, because you only have 10 or 11 gallons in a model a , depending on model, eh!
If you haven't heard of it, seek out the 'milepost' book regarding this area your going into..its invaluable. problem with it tho is that some critical/valuable info may NOT be accurate. depending on the time of year, some places of business ...may be out of business temporarily or permanently! and if one of those places is a gas station that you were relying on..yikes! ergo..the trailer/gas cans equal extra capacity/safety margin! Several years ago (2008?)were the HIGHEST gas prices in my lifetime. Paid over $5 a gallon regularly and $6.56 gal in good ole canada!!

That 6.56 gal purchase reminds me to give you this tip....remember we are out in the middle of 'nowhere' canada, late in the day, raining...drive up to this 1950s looking pump at this huge log lodge: "no sir we dont take cash" what? "you'll need two forms of identification"..." and an acceptable credit card". Ray, take lots of money, but take lots of id...and a good set of raingear,eh!
There are so many things to tell a first time visitor to Alaska! First, this USA state is an eye poping stunning beautiful like none other..anywhere!
We spent two months in a fifth wheel trailer mostly in Alaska and it wasn't hardly enough! If I were 50 years younger....this is THE place to be!
What model a are you driving...roadster,what? I ask as it is, at times damp/rainy/wet/snow area (think heater) with an abundance of skeeters! therefore take dope and get skeeter netting from your local sport goods(cabellas). yeah, they sell it there too:)!
I made a 'protective' device for my truck front, and that helped what was covered, BUT what aint covered will get gravel pelted ! so be prepaired for gravel/mud. you see, they only have a very short season to repair frost damaged road, so construction is inevitable and sketchey. I am a slowpoke driver and tried to pull to the right when on coming traffic approached...but that wont get it when the oncoming traffic is going like a bat out of hell! thats how my windshield/paint was damaged. yes, they have rice rockets there too and BIG fast trucks! I only ran across one group of ole car owners and they came into our campground to show off and mix with us. I was amazed at the variety/beauty of cars 'touring' our camp! and ,of course, the owners were proud to show..just like us here!
Don't forget the spares..including tires/tubes. did i say about raingear/boots? can not have too many warm clothes. can takeem off but not putem on..if you dont haveem,eh? tons of wild animals...we had la type traffic jams..only with animals,i.e.- mtn goats, buffalo, moose, bear.
i took fishing gear...for protection, as canada prohibits guns thru border. there are so many fish that you either beatem off with the rods or eatem to protect yourself:cool:!
anyway, checkout the 'milepost' book, you wont be sorry! oh, and take a camera ditigal/otherwise with plenty capacity..as proof that the moose stuck its head in your window:eek: hmm, mabe i could go as your guide,eh?

Does Canada enforce different equipment requirements?
I believe turn signals are mandatory in Europe.
How about seat belts, or do "Grandfather Rules" rule?

Seat Belts!?
Some of the Queen's Cowboys will need education as they are not old enough to remember cars without them. If you have them installed you better be wearing them though.
You can still do hand signals but again a lot of our drivers would not know what they mean, so signalling equipment is a bonus.
Do not talk or text on the phone as it is illegal here now.
Speed limits still top out at 90 kph so if you can do 60 mph you shouldn't hold up too much traffic.
I think this would be a great trip and I for one am jealous.

True: A DUI is a violation of the Canada Criminal Code and is treated as a felony.

A US Border Patrolman told me the US lets Canadians with current DUI's into the US with no problem.

True: The US does not treat drinking and driving as serious as Canada (yet).

The Canadian border folks aren't all that welcoming of Americans to their lovely country.

FALSE: The Canadian culture is very hospitable, unless you're a convicted criminal. Hell, if you signal a lane change, they will even let you in.
