Driveshaft u j mounting

Wooden wheel

Junior Member
Just putting the finishing touch's to my gearbox assembly and have discovered that there looks as though there should be a retaining washer to hold the U J to the rear gearbox shaft. The bolt was in place when I dismantled it but obviously was not doing anything as the U J can slide off without removing the bolt. ie no washer.
Question,1: should there be washer?
2: the U J does not go right on to the end of the shaft so how do I know what packer to put on the end of the shaft without overloading the bearing?.:confused:
Really enjoy and getting a lot of great assistance from this forum, Hope I can be of help to someone out there over the next year or two. Many thans:)

1. There is a special heavy large diameter washer to hold the universal joint on to the main shaft. It has a square dimple pressed into it that locates into one of the splines inside the universal. It appears as part no A-7095 in the Snyder cataloge. To hold this washer in place is a bolt and spring washer.
2. There is no packer required on the end of the shaft.
Happy Motoring.

Wow that was quick I dare say us kiwis are the only ones not in bed. Many thanks for info. Looking forward to getting "Ralph" back on the road.

You want to be sure to install this correct washer. It is also a good idea to put some sealer on the front facing side of the washer. The washer prevents oil from the transmission from passing down the flutes of the main shaft and into the U-joint housing.

Thanks Tom, I have had an issue with oil loss from the trans so all suggestions have been of great assistance. I discovered the rear flinger was missing and now the washer so correcting these should help the situation.
