Drive shaft lenght

I am installing a new set of gears in my 33 rearend and the pinion shaft is longer that the stock by about one half inch. The spacer included with the gears is .522 so I guess I will have to shorten my drive shaft by that amount. I was wondering if anyone out there has ever done this? I would like to get the original lenght to compare that to my shaft since it has been modified with a six spline coupler already so I'm looking for a lenght of a stock shaft. Dennis

Dennis,
I have an unaltered '34 drive shaft and it measures 60 and 1/8 inches. Hope this helps.

I just received a new 3.54 ring & pinor for my 33. I was supplied with 2 1/4 " spacers to make up the 1/2 " length difference of the pinon. One of the spacers has a slight chamfer on the ID but it is not enough. It rocks on the shaft to gear radius. I am going to have to increase the chamfer so that the one spacer ring fits flat against the gear face. You might want to check yours.

On 1/22/11 I posted question (change tubular drive line from 10 to 6 spline) and got some good info. You might check it out. I have not yet made the change. In addition, if you have access to the May-June 1983 issue of V-8 Times page 5 there is a nice diagram and additional information. I am not able to forward it.

With your "stock" '33 and '34 driveshafts, be aware that there's a difference in length between passenger and pickup and four and eight cylinders.

Where are you folks getting gears for 33/34 rear ends? I would love to change mine from 411 to somthing higher. Everything I see available starts with 35 diffs. Ken

Job Lot most likely has them but I'm sure there are several more that carry them in stock. Mac VanPelt or Dick Spadaro might too. You just have to check around the different early Ford suppliers. All the 32 late thru 34 rears have to use the later 6 spline type with the 1/2 inch adapter ring. Shortening the driveshaft as larry/Texas mentioned, has a good thread that you can search & check out. All you need is a 6 to 10 spline adapter that is available at most early Ford supply houses.

The 3.54 gears I have were purchased from Mac's' see page 30 of their late 2010 catalog. They are also listed in Drake's catalog.

Be sure to look at my comments above.
