Drive shaft Help

I have a '41 closed drive shaft. My question is, does the snap ring on the front of the shaft sit tight against the u-joint or is there play in between the two?

Lots of play for everything in there. Main concern is that speedo gear is able to position properly.

there is a grove in the shaft for the snap ring that holds the speedo gear in place, without it the front bearing in the torque tube would walk back and forth.
