Dreaded stuck timing gear nut

I was scratching my head on how that tool would work, until I saw what Henry used on the original cars. How in the word did he come up with that shape for a nut? [emoji2357]

I wondered the same thing but I now figure it was cheaper to do it that way. That whole nut is done on a lathe with the exception of the flats. It is cheaper to machine only 2 flats instead of 6.

The original nut is pretty simple to remove – if you have the original Ford service wrench. For awhile in the '60s, to remove the nut (and I assume also install it) with a hammer and punch was completely accepted if you didn't have the special wrench.

IIRC, the Model A "spark plug/cylinder head nuts" wrench fits the camshaft nut.

alexiskai, where did you get that image from? I don't believe the camshaft nut is 1-3/4". I don't have a spare camshaft nut to measure. The red book says 1-1/8" socket, which doesn't make sense either because it's not a hex nut.

That sketch appeared in MARC News, Mar. 1965, p. 19. I can confirm that the dimension on my modern camshaft nut tool is also 1-3/4".

There are a lot of errors in the red book !
