Drake '40 tank

We did one on my wife's 40 tudor sedan. I know i didn't lift the body so I'm guessing i trimmed it a little on each side. I do remember it was a pain in the ***. I wasn't concerned about damaging the paint since the car is a survivor.

On my new Drake '34 tank I had an issue getting the 1936-1956 Drake sending unit to fit. It seems that the dies for the bolt hoes in the sender are a bit worn and after struggling for nearly an hour to get all the screws to thread in I pulled out a very small round file and made each hole ever so slightly wider left to right (think hot dog shaped) and it bolted up just fine after.

Does anyone know what the 10 inner bolt holes in the sending unit mount are for? I assumed at first they were for the Drake sending unit. But looking at pics of it on their website it uses the outer 6 like the OEM sending unit.

Those inner holes are to mount a modern sender. Stewart Warner, etc. They are smaller in diameter than the stock one..

Gotcha, thanks for the info.

Sadly, it appears the reason an OEM sending unit won't fit is because they had to make the hole smaller to accommodate this modern sender mounting.

Any body looking for a used 40 tank, I have one I will not use just taking up space on the shelve. It had a lot of gunk inside and I have cleaned it some but does need more work ! Shipping would probable be pricy unless you have a trucking friend ?

Got the Drake tank install finished yesterday. As others posted I had to remove some material from the sides for it to go in with the body on and also had to modify the opening to run a stock sending unit.

I was hoping Drake had addressed some of the issues, but it looks like their design has not changed.
