I'm in the process of replacing my door panels that were water damaged when I bought the car and also missing half the screws that hold them. When I removed the panels to make new ones I saw why screws were missing, the inserts the screws screw into are missing.
Can anyone tell what they are called and whether or not they are still available, or an alternative?

I think they are called PEM nuts. They have to be pressed into a matching hole in the sheet metal. Will be hard to replace them.

My ccpu had these little nail-like fasteners and a brass socket.

The reproductions have a nylon socket.

Is this what you have? My pickup is a '29..

Glad I could help.

Once those ringed nails are put in there is no getting them out again.

I had to remove the door panel some time after to replace the window. Only way to get the panel off without ruining it was to cut a hole around the nail head. When I put it back together I used small Phillips head screws and cup washers.
