I know this has been talked about before but at the time I did not need the service.
Who would be your recommendation to convert a 6V Generator to a 6V alternator
THANKS

Bill,
If it was me I would change over to 12 volts, really not that hard and your GPS and cell phone can charge off the cigarette lighter then. Hi to Lee, from Kath.

Bill

Ed whitney in Cailfornia takes a stock 6 volt Ford generator and istalls a Mitubusi alt. inside. The outer case is slightly larger than original. It will produce 12 volts ,70 amps. You can even have a dummy cut out on the top to make it look real.
This alt will not charge a low speeds but will be fine with normal driving.
The other way is take a stock 6 volt generator and install 12 volt fields frrom a early 60's generator. This will produce 12 volt @ 60 amps. I have this in my 36 and it works fine.
If you are after the 6 volt you might check with L.D. Becker @ Norwalk Ohio.Phone # 419-668-5986
Hope this helps

Bill I made 7 6 volt alternators for my own use and have put 5 or 6,000 miles on them and they work perfect. Most GPSs will run on 6 volts but drop out once in a while and need to be restarted. Before my trip back to Fl. from Pa. I bought a small 2 1/2 x2 1/2" 6 to 12 volt converter for POS ground that I leave in the glove box. It is fused to 6 volts and grounded. I put a female lighter socket on it and plug the GPS into it in the gloove box. The lighter in the car could be rewired for 12 volts or a male extention plug on the converter could be plugged into the existing 6 volt lighter. I did that in my 39 P/U and can move it to other cars. I travel a lot in the old cars and once you get used to the GPS you don't want ot be without it. It gives you the correct time, speed, distance, time to destination and when you will arrive which is updated as you travel. I will give the information and required parts on how to build the 6 volt alternators to someone who has the equiptment and ability to make them but I' m not going to get involved with people who want to make one. This takes machineing and electrical experiance. The electronics are built onto the rear brush cap and plug into the alternators stator and rotor. I would never want a generator again after using the alternator. Find my recent post on how I was able to travel 800 with a with a bad battery with no problems. With the generator I would have been stuck Sat. afternoon on I-95 looking for a new 6 volt battery. G.M.

Hi chuck, just wanted to let you and others know that it is possible to use gps and charge cell phones on 6V but if you have pos ground you must make a jumper plug to switch polarity to feed negative ground 6V to gps and cell phone. GM told me about this and it works well.

Bill,
Send Henry Di Orio ( HD on here ) a PM. He's in Wilmington, and does 6v alternators.

Chuck

For my MG TF, which is 12 V, positive ground, I wired up a cigar lighter socket, to run my GPS. It was mounted in the glove box to the wood/fabric back wall. Then I wired the positive circuit to the center post of the socket, and the negative circuit to the base. This seemed to work right. Any comments on this?

GM: See my comments to JM 35 Sedan above, and give me your thoughts. Can I do the same for my '34 Pickup, which is 6V Positive ground. Thanks, Byron.

All the above,in my opinion, is good advice. The 12 volt battery for my car is the way to go.I do have a Bentley that had 12v,positive ground.Ain't that a hoot.Yes,I did convert it with excellent results.Years ago,Our SAE thought it wise to have a positive ground.General Motors proved them wrong.I worked on a friend's 1946 GMC truck that was 6v.positive ground. That year,GMC had some positive ground 6V,some negative ground 6v.
