Hi,

Took apart the rear axle. The axle is broken and the carrier housing is broken.

All gears not broken but some show some wear.

Look at the ring and pinion gears and let me know if i should replace.

I understand there just pictures. I tried to show the wear as best I could.

Thank you.

It's always difficult to give a good assessment based on pictures only but I think even though that Crown Wheel and Pinion (CW&P) will go for a while yet, I wouldn't put it back. The amount of work involved in changing them is substantial and would have to be done again before long. I'd check the spider gears and replace if needed and replace that CW&P and bearings. It's expensive, I know but we pay about double what you guys pay by the time we get stuff here. Do it right, do it once.
BTW I'd replace the broken axle too!!! :)

Judging by the wear at the tips of the teeth on the ring gear, it appears that the rear end was not set up correctly. In 1930 it would go back in because it was just an old car then and you were trying to save as much money as possible. Now it does not make any sense to put damaged parts back in. Setting up the rear end takes some care and some time but it is worth it in the long run. A properly assembled and maintained rear end will last your lifetime or two.

I'm have one rebuilt right now. All new parts are being used. Mechanic will not guarantee otherwise. I'm OK with that, never need to rebuild another in my life-time. At age 80, I can't do this kind of repair, am grateful for his experience

You did not mention ratio. That looks like a 37 t ring gear (4:11). If so, I would go to a 3:78 gear set.

This one’s not difficult at all…. Based on the fact that this rear end was driven under great duress and stress when the bearings were locking up and indeed there does seem to be wear I would not use that gear set . I would not use the other axle either. Check your carrier races for looseness. I’ve done hundreds of axles and would not touch these parts with a ten foot pole .

Ya Gotta Be kidding me! At least with what I'm seeing there, YES! And No you can't buy just a pinion. But take the damage as a given and replace it. But do yourself a favor and get a 3.54 gears and enjoy your model A. Cost? Bearings, gears gaskets, etc, a little north of $700. Good Luck!

Contact area really isn't shown in the pics. But the gears don't look like they've had an easy life. I didn't count the teeth, but, if it is a 4.11 gear set then it makes sense to get new ones in a different ratio.
